Abstract | Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the renal resistive index (RI) measurement after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in patients with nephrolithiasis. Materials and Methods: Our study consisted of 25 patients (21 with renal stone and 4 with renal pelvis stone) underwent color doppler examination of the renal resistive index before and immediately after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). Measurements were made in the treated kidney and the contralateral kidney for renal stones. Results: On the basis of this finding three age groups (group 1: 20 to 39 years old, group 2: 40 to 59 years old, group 3: older than 60 years) could be distinguished, blood pressure and heart rate showed no significant changes before and immediately after ESWL at all groups (p>0.05). Except treated kidney of group 3, no significant change of RI was observed in both treated kidney and contralateral kidney before and immediately after ESWL at all groups (p>0.05). According to location, size, body mass index (BMI), pretreatment, ESWL energy, no signifcant differences were observed in both treated kidney and contralateral kidney before and immediately after ESWL (p>0.05). Conclusions: Patient's blood pressure, heart rate and renal resistive index before and immediately after ESWL with renal stones had no temporary change significantly. No deleterious effects was observed in the location, size, BMI, pretreatment, ESWL energy immediately after ESWL. |
